Degree Requirements for the Doctor in Pharmacy Course

  • Accomplishment of the four-year professional curriculum
  • With a minimum of 3 months of clinical experienceis required to earn the Doctor of Pharmacy degree.
  • Cumulative course hours must equal a minimum of 144 units.
  • For students who come in the course in 2015 or later, the least number of units to finish the PharmD degree is 133 units.
  • Students must successfully complete all required courses in the PharmD curriculum with a minimum grade of C in all letter-graded project
  • CREDIT for all non-letter-graded projectwhich is equivalent to B quality or better.

For students who enrolment Fall 2015 or later, a minimum of a 3 collective grade point average (avg.) is essential to encounter graduation requirements. Students are subject to the degree requirements in the USC List current for the semester of their admission into the PharmD program, as well as the School of Pharmacy’s Academic Policies and Procedures handbook.

Students who terminate their enrolment with an authorized leave of absence will be subject to the degree requirements in effect for the semester of their re-admission into the program. Students requesting exemptions should submit a petition to the School of Pharmacy.

Licensure as an Intern Pharmacist

Students enrolled in the School of Pharmacy must get their intern licensure with the California State Board of Pharmacy at the commencement of their first year. The Intern Pharmacist’s license must be clear at all times during enrollment in the PharmD program. Applications for intern licensure are accessible from the Office of Admission & Student Affairs, School of Pharmacy and may carry out any of the duties of a registered pharmacist while working under the direct as well as personal supervision of a registered pharmacist.

Licensure as a Registered Pharmacist in California

In order to practice pharmacy in California, individuals must meet state requirements, given below:

  • Candidates must be at least 18 years.
  • Candidates must be of good ethical character and of pleasant habits.
  • To be eligible for examination, the candidate must be graduated from a school or college of pharmacy qualified by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education or recognized by the State Board of Pharmacy, or have completed equal education and experience outside the US (United States), approved by the State Board.
  • Practical experience of minimum 2 months, is required before licensure may be granted. This experience must mainly relate to the dispensing of medications, compounding of treatments, preparing pharmaceutical preparations, keeping chronicles, and making reports required by state and federal acts.
  • California has no give-and-take agreement with any state.
